Reach the Correct Records Office
Watauga County separates police reports, county detention records, court files, state correction records, and federal custody information. For a county booking or current jail status, start with the Watauga County Sheriff's Office and its Detention Center. Administrative hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except holidays. The detention operation is open around the clock, but that does not mean records staff are available at all hours.

Use the records line for a specific county-held booking or arrest record and the detention line for current Watauga County custody. A city police department, court, NCDAC, or federal agency may hold a different part of the same person's record. The following routes keep those responsibilities clear:
- For a Watauga County booking record or maintained booking photo, review the official-first request path on the county recent-arrests home page, then call Administration/Records. No county booking-photo fee or guaranteed turnaround is published.
- For a municipal incident or arrest report, contact the arresting department directly: Boone Police, Blowing Rock Police, or Beech Mountain Police. County records staff cannot release a city record they do not hold.
- For current county custody, call the Watauga County Detention Center. For a release or transfer alert, use the statewide NC SAVAN/VINELink service when the custody record participates, while remembering that some local police and pre-booking events may not appear.
- For bond terms, a hearing date, filed court documents, or the final case outcome, use the Watauga County court route or contact the Clerk of Superior Court. A booking charge is not the court disposition.
- For a person serving a state sentence or under state probation or parole, use the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction offender search. NCDAC does not supply Watauga County jail information.
- For federal prison custody, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator. Federal pretrial detention may require the court or U.S. Marshals Service because it is not the same as county or state custody.
- For immigration detention, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator. A missing result in Watauga detention, NCDAC, or VINELink does not establish federal immigration status.
